WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF STERLING SCHOLARS?
"The purpose of the Sterling Scholar Awards is to publicly recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership and citizenship of high school seniors in the state of Utah. The Sterling Scholar Awards program seeks to commend and encourage excellence among all students. All nominees are judged equally on the basis of scholastic achievement without regard to religion, sex, political preference or national origin. The sponsors salute the extraordinary development of the talents and ideals of each year’s outstanding scholars. We gratefully acknowledge the cooperation and assistance of the State Office of Education, Utah colleges and universities, school districts, high school administrations and faculties, Utah businesses and many others." - http://www.sterlingscholar.org

A Sterling Scholar is a high school senior who is publicly recognized and awarded for the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership and citizenship. A potential Sterling Scholar presents an all-encompassing portfolio on their work in a specific category and is interviewed by judges in the category's field. To be selected as a Sterling Scholar nominee you must have above average academic scores (3.5 GPA or higher and ACT score of 22 or higher), as well as service in leadership and citizenship. You will submit an application and selection will be made by the Principal and the school's Sterling Scholar committee. If you are passionate about and involved in one of the above categories, you are encouraged to apply! It is a rigorous process, and will take a lot of dedication and hard work, but you will find it ultimately worthwhile in preparing for college and other scholarships. There are monetary awards for those who are chosen, and awards and scholarships for those named winners and runners up. South Summit High School is dedicated to encouraging and mentoring students who wish to become Sterling Scholars, and will do everything we can to prepare you to compete! See Ms. Regan in the Counseling Office if you are interested in becoming a Sterling Scholar.
